LG refrigerator compressor problems

I’ve seen a lot of fairly new and quite expensive LG refrigerators simply stop cooling due to their “linear” compressors failing. It’s an unusual failure because the compressor and fans are all running, but it’s just not cooling well. In other brands this is normally due to the sealed system having lost refrigerant due to a small leak somewhere in the endless tubing of the condenser or evaporator, but in LG’s case it is invariably due to their compressors internal seals breaking so it can no longer create the pressure needed to cool.

It has become such an issue over the years that LG has been sued and now has an extended warranty on its compressors. Sometimes it just covers parts, sometimes it covers parts and labor. I put some links to more information below.

I no longer do sealed system repair work due to the cost of the repair typically outweighing the value of the refrigerator, however, if they’ll cover parts and labor then it’s probably worth finding a repairman who will do the work.

It will be free to you as it’s covered by LG, but you’ll have to do all the leg work and arrange with LG. It could take a few months, so you are not going to want this be your primary fridge for the time being, move it into the garage while you are waiting.
