The knob on this GE washer was no longer able to select cycles. It is a free floating dial that only engages when pushed in and turned. The notches had become worn down and it no longer could engage.

The unfortunate thing is that this is just a few cents worth of plastic that caused this problem, but it required a whole new timer to repair it properly. I was able to order the timer and new dial here.
